Photoshop Collage Composition

Description

  • Selecting an impactful or memorable piece of writing and researching examples of captivating, motivational, and inspiring digital collage compositions.

  • Picking a scene from the writing that includes elements such as location, characters, action, clothing, objects, time of day, and mood, and sketching different ways to portray the scene.

  • Collecting and modifying ten raster images to produce an entirely original composition that visually represents the selected scene.

  • The finished piece should demonstrate how to create a strong focus point, eye movement, and coherent composition neatly and professionally.

Objective

Gain practical knowledge of Photoshop as an editing and compositing tool for raster-based images.

Design Concept

The poem "The Two-Headed Calf" by Laura Gilpin was the piece of writing I selected for this project. The poem tells the story of the first and last night of a two-headed calf before a farmer wraps it in newspaper and takes it to the museum. The scene I chose to visually represent is the part where the calf saw the night sky with its mother. To depict the number of stars the calf observed, I merged three images of stars and galaxies, alluding to the quote "there are twice as many stars as usual." Furthermore, I included two moons and planets relating to the sentence "moon rising over the orchard..." I created a layered background of fields, grass, and trees to represent the scene's farming background and included a farmer as a representation of the person in the poem.
