Black & White Composition
Description
-
Creating a sense of three-dimensional depth on a two-dimensional surface by experimenting with the concept of abstraction from a representational object.
-
Developing rough pencil sketches on tracing paper, and more defined sketches in pen on a Bristol board and arranging the abstractions into different possible compositions on tracing paper.
-
Creating a final composition using pen and marker on a Bristol board. This is done to continue improving one's skill sets across a variety of media while producing two-dimensional designs.
Objective
To effectively portray a sense of three-dimensional depth on a two-dimensional surface by exploring the connections between line, value, and shape in the creation of a complex composition.
Design Concept
I chose to explore the concept of abstraction through the object of an Iron Man Lego figure. I began by observing the different angles and producing rough sketches. I was drawn to the areas that had the most detail and the ones with irregular shapes and curves. Out of the many sketches, I refined my top three choices and ended up basing my final composition on the foot of the Lego figure. I liked the idea of having the square-ended shape connect itself infinitely and adding a spiral in the center. In addition, I experimented with the shapes that were on the foot of the Lego. Essentially, the farther the object is from the surface the more the shapes detach themselves from the object. I used hatching, stippling, and shading to explore with the illusion of three-dimensions.
